If you’re a New Yorker and haven’t heard about Banksy at all in the last week, then you have been living under a magical rock. Banksy has been everywhere, and is planning to be everywhere every day for the month of October. He has somehow transformed the streets of New York into his own personal art exhibition, titled Better Out Than In, featuring a brand new street art piece or installation (or video) on his website during the day. His art exhibition name is a reference to famous impressionist Paul Cezanne, who is credited with the quote:
All pictures painted inside, in the studio, will never be as good as those done outside.
While Banksy is more widely known for his trademark black-and-white stencil art to be found on empty facades, you can expect the famous street artist to be experimenting with different mediums throughout October. In his first week alone, he has showcased a mobile garden installation and even released an interesting video on Youtube. And to top off his rebellious attitude toward authority, he even offers an audio guide that accompanies each work of art. All you have to do is dial 1 (800) 656-4271 #_ (with the blank correlating to the day’s art) to get a tongue-in-cheek audio guide that describes the painting (and even mispronouncing the artist’s own name!).
Each week, Redesign Revolution will be recapping the previous week’s showcases. First up, Days 1-7.
Day 1: Chinatown
“The street is in play”
Day 2: Westside
“This is my New York Accent”
Day 3: Midtown
“You complete me…”
Day 4: Delancey, Bushwick, Williamsburg
An ongoing series of random graffiti given a Broadway makeover.
“Occupy! The Musical”
“Playground Mob: The Musical”
“Dirty Underwear: The Musical”
Day 5: All Over
Delivery truck converted into a mobile garden, complete with a rainbow, waterfall (with real water flowing into a pool), bridge, and butterflies.
Day 6: Virtual
About a minute in you’ll probably start laughing.
Day 7: Brooklyn
You have to listen the audio guide to get the full effect of this bandaged helium balloon. (It left us laughing out loud.)
We wonder what he’ll be up to next! Follow live updates on Twitter: #banksyny.
