Each year, thousands of pets drown in backyard swimming pools in the United States because proper safety measures have not been taken by their human companions–often terrible tragedies that could have been prevented. Photographer Seth Casteel decided to raise awareness about the heartbreaking issue by publishing Underwater Puppies (the sequel to Underwater Dogs), which features 72 swimming puppies from six weeks to six months old. Is that not the cutest thing you have ever heard of?!

In addition, to remind people that adopting their pets is a wonderful option, Casteel worked with hundreds of adoptable puppies from animal rescue groups all over the nation. So far, he’s taught over 1,500 puppies how to doggy paddle, which will help them build confidence and safety skills in the water. Check out a few of the cute canines below!

Casteel wants pool owners and owners of dogs who have access to pools to consider all precautions, such as limiting access to the pool, having proper pool exits, installing alarms, and most importantly, teaching your pet how to get out of the pool in case they accidentally fall in.

“[When taking these pictures] many of the puppies only swam for a few minutes, learning about buoyancy, their physicality in the water and most importantly, how to get out of a pool. But some of the puppies immediately thrived and began playing, jumping in and chasing toys,” says Casteel.

Luckily, Seth Casteel’s latest book, Underwater Puppies, is now on sale for you to see all of the amazingly cute photos of puppies learning to swim! It’s a great investment not only because of the countless adorable puppies but also because of the vital message it sends.
