Etsy Wednesday: Avatar: The Last Airbender

I bet a lot more people would sign up for martial arts lessons if they thought it would allow them to control one of the elements. I know I, for one, would. How cool would it be to be a bender like Aang or Katara? Of course, that isn’t really possible, so I would just end up flailing around like a moron, unable to break one of those boards in half. The white robes look comfortable though, but I would rather just wear them while I watch Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Okay kids, here’s the skinny: There are four nations that represent the four elements. There’s the Water Tribe, the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation, and the Air Nomads. Within each nation there are some people (benders) who have command of the element of their nation. Additionally, there is always one person living (the Avatar) who can control all of the elements. When one Avatar dies, another is born to replace him/her.

The Avatar is required to learn how to master each of the elements in order, beginning with their own native element. The Avatar can enter the Avatar State, which is not an exclusive university—it’s actually when the Avatar is most powerful. The idea is for the Avatar to be able to enter the Avatar State at will. If the Avatar is killed in the Avatar State, then the reincarnation cycle stops. As you can probably guess: that’s a bad thing.

A century before the series starts, the leader of the Fire Nation, Lord Sozin, decided that he wanted to conquer some more land and expand his territory. The then Avatar Roku prevented Lord Sozin from waging war. When Avatar Roku died, an airbender named Aang became the new Avatar, but when Aang was separated from his mentor, he fled on his flying bison, Appa.

As they left, Aang and Appa were caught in a storm. Scared, the young Avatar entered the Avatar State, which trapped the pair in an iceberg. They were kept frozen for 100 years, during which time Lord Sozin decided to commit genocide.

Katara and Sokka, from the Water Tribe, stumble upon Aang’s iceberg. The brother and sister manage to free the Avatar and get him up to date on all of Lord Sozin’s antics. This is when Aang decides he has to restore peace—and I can’t tell you any more than that. You’re going to have to check it out for yourself.
