Did you know that The New York Times was founded on September 18, 1851? In honor of their 161st birthday, we are going to showcase our 10 favorite alternative logo designs that NY Times themselves commissioned different companies to create earlier in 2012 for a special edition of The New York Times Magazine. There has only ever been one major change to the classic logo, and it was in 1967 when the newspaper’s design director, Louis Silverstein, decided to remove the period at the end of the logo. (There was a period at the end?)

Can you imagine the response, when a logo that had been the same for 116 years had been altered? One reader asked, “How would you like to wake up and find your wife’s face had changed?”

So the newspaper got even more daring when they commissioned 8 different designers to re-imagine the logo. There were 18 finalists. Here are our 10 favorite alternative logos:

Inspiration: Chromatography, which is a process undertaken without a clear idea of what you’re going to get.

Inspiration: Ink drawings, which are a result of layering multiple altered shapes of the original logo.

Inspiration: Looking at the same logo in a new way.

Inspiration: Abstract — they wanted to put legibility to the test by reducing the classic logo to an arbitrary collection of geometric shapes.

Inspiration: An ode to flight, one of man’s greatest achievements.

Inspiration: Pictogram. Pictograms, like emoticons, have been fully incorporated into our daily language, and they wanted to showcase that.

Inspiration: Their basic belief that innovation never stands still. They took the concept of revolution literally to create this look.

Inspiration: Classic and chaotic. He wanted the shapes to break out of the normal logo space to symbolize the spread of information and ideas.
