Looks like Avatar fans are in a frenzy today as Book Four of Avatar: The Legend of Korra premiered today, on October 3rd, on Nickelodeon’s website. What is it about the series that has harnessed such a cult-like following? perhaps it’s the incredible storyline, plot, action and choreography, characters, or beautifully made and executed artwork. Whether it’s the characters or the setting, this series has a whole lot to offer and fans have been anxiously awaiting for the fourth and last installment of the Avatar spin off.

Perhaps one of the most intriguing aspects to us, however, is the incredible art and design work that goes into making a show of this magnitude – not only in fan base but also in complexity. The series is not just about repetitive characters in the same 3 settings. The show transports you to a completely different time and place and aims to be as realistic as possible with the obvious elements of fantasy.
To closer examine the exceptional work that goes into this, we thought to go to the ultimate source and mastermind of the visual aspects of Avatar and Legend of Korra. What could be more fundamental to a show like this than the background and settings. Frederic William Stewart is one of the background painters, along with Emily Tetri, and together they work on producing everything from image boards, lighting, painting, and revisions. He has won an Annie Award for his work on the show, and it is much deserved – which you can tell by either watching the show or taking a look at the below background that he recently posted on his tumblr from Book 3 as seen below. Of the post, he stated:
“Korra Book 3 finale is online right now! These are some backgrounds from this season and some comps from the finale. I did the paint. Layout was most likely either Angela Sung or William Niu.”

While these backgrounds are from last season, they will surely help you relive the many memories and scenes from the past and get you excited for what’s to come!
