It’s that time of year again, folks. Movember, the annual month-long movement that has taken the globe by storm, begins today. In an effort to change the face of men’s health (literally), individuals put down their favorite razors and grow mustaches and beards to raise funds that have contributed to the battle of prostate and testicular cancel as well as mental health challenges.
But there are communities that have taken the Movember mantra to the next lifestyle. Growing their own beards and mustaches is a lifestyle. It’s a statement. There are even competitions dedicated to the art of beard and mustache grooming – in fact, the 4th annual National Beard and Mustache Championships (organized by Beard Team USA) took place on September 7, 2013. Over 150 men from the US, UK, and Canada dedicated to this elaborate art form, congregated to compete 17 categories in New Orleans, Louisiana, at the House of Blues in the French Quarter. You can check out the winners list here and here.
Las Vegas-based commercial photographer Greg Anderson, was commissioned as the official event photographer of this majestic event. As expected, he captured many a whimsical character at the event. It wasn’t too long after the event before he uploaded over 150 photos to his Facebook gallery and went viral (as of this writing, his feature on Twisted Sifter received over 42,000 Facebook likes – insane). And it’s to be expected, as well. These portraits are silly, whimsical, and warm-hearted. Not only has he captured the tone of the annual competition, his gallery has brought an incredible amount of attention to the event and lifestyle of bearded men.
We selected a few of our favorite bearded competitors. These are certainly individuals we’d like to meet ourselves.
