If you’re green and your heart is “two sizes too small”, you should probably see a doctor. Then again, you might just be a character from a very famous Dr. Suess book.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas is the perfect movie to start the Christmas movie-watching season. Everyone knows about the curmudgeonly, festivity hating Grinch, but if you don’t, here’s the gist of his story:

High above Whoville, in a cave on Mount Crumpit, lives the hairy, green Grinch and his unloved dog, Max. The Grinch is a recluse who doesn’t like noise and disturbances—so he hates the Christmas celebrations of the Whos in Whoville below. He hatches a dastardly scheme to put an end to the nonsense.

The Grinch disguises himself (as best as he can) as Santa Claus. And using a pair of antlers that had been mounted on a plaque on the wall, he disguises Max as a reindeer.

With Max the “reindeer” pulling his sleigh, the Grinch heads into Whoville and begins sliding down chimneys and stealing the presents and trees from the Whos. During one heist, the Grinch is discovered by a little girl Who, named Cindy Lou, but he’s able to lie his way out of her house.

With all of Whoville’s Christmas preparations in tow, he heads back to the top of Mount Crumpit where he intends to dispose of the things by dropping them into the abyss. He’s also eager to hear the cries of the people of Whoville as they wake up to their freshly-looted homes.

But, as dawn breaks, the Grinch hears the opposite of what he’d been expecting. Instead of mournful wailing, the Grinch hears the citizens of Whoville join together in a Christmas song. Despite everything that the Grinch had taken from them, they still seemed to be happy.

It occurs to the Grinch that maybe Christmas isn’t just about the presents and the decorations. Maybe, it’s more than all that. Suddenly, his heart grows three sizes, and he returns the things he stole as a new man—or, whatever he is.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas has been made into several movies. The 1966 animated version featured Boris Karloff as both the Grinch and the narrator. The 2000 version is live-action, and stars Jim Carrey. Both movies are great, and there’s still plenty of time to watch both before Christmas!
