One of the major lessons I learned in college was that social responsibility and entrepreneurship had the capacity to grow into something huge. The fact that TOMS Shoes has become as big as it is to warrant copycats like Skechers BOBS Shoes, or as many celebrities have taken part in promoting the vision behind Do Something, or for Invisible Children to produce a video that became one of Youtube’s most viral videos in history shows that. But not all visions and goals are as big as the international reach of TOMS Shoes or Invisible Children — some social entrepreneurs think about the changes we need to make right here at home. That is why New Creation NYC, a coffee shop with the community in mind, speaks to me as an individual.
New Creation NYC is a community coffee shop and bakery with a social mission to serve and revitalize the Washington Heights and Inwood communities in Upper Manhattan. Can you imagine a coffee shop that actually tackles the issues of poverty, unemployment, health and education just by serving you a cup of coffee and baked good? That’s exactly what could happen if New Creation’s Kickstarter campaign raises the necessary $50,000 to launch their coffee shop in early 2013. See their video below, explaining their social mission:
They’ve already got the space on 213th Street and Broadway. They’ve hired the architect who designed this gorgeous space you see here in the digital renderings. They’re ready to hire the contracts, buy the equipment, and hire their first trainees. All they need is the capital to do it! How could you say no?
And as a caveat (that is a lot more related to the theme of Redesign Revolution) how can you not drool over the adorable packaging and logo they’ve designed?
Say hi to the New Creation NYC Team!
