It’s no secret that Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy has been a huge boon for New Zealand’s tourism industry. They’ve gone a step further in anticipation of Jackson’s latest Tolkien epic “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” by creating commemorative coins stamped with the faces of iconic LOTR characters. Best part of the news: it’s going to be official legal tender. So if you want to visit New Zealand come November 1, get yourself ready to use some official Lord of the Rings currency with the familiar faces of Gandalf, Bilbo Baggins, and even Gollum!
We at Redesign Revolution are absolutely in love with the design of the coins, which will make any true LOTR fan get a little fanatic. They’ve gone as far mint some of the coins in real gold, which means a lot of the coins will be going for much higher sums (think $3,000+) than their face value (NZ $1 – NZ $10).
