Take one look at your social media news feeds (especially in the summer time) and you will see it littered with sunsets and clear blue skies. Whether you are located in a city or the countryside, something about taking a moment and appreciating all that nature has to offer – whether it is in the form of green grass, the deep blue ocean, or colorful skies – puts as all at ease. And (even if it is just for one moment) makes us happy to be alive.

This astounding footage and imagery by South Dakota photographer and videographer Randy Halverson, capture just that in uninhabited regions of South Dakota, Wyoming, and Utah. Coupling bursts of colors caused natural phenomenons and formations (such as the Northern Lights, Milky Way, lightning storms, and even just twinkling night skies) against serene landscapes, is enough to make you skeptical. Skeptical, why? Sometimes it is hard to believe that such beauty can be possible in a world that is constantly on the go. Luckily for us, Halverson dedicated 40 nights across eight months in the search for the most inspiring and breathtaking scenes.
Randy actually began a stock footage company which sold pictures of storms in the 1990s but later decided to start shooting time lapse video in 2010, and we are glad he did. This would ensure continuous perfect imagery and the ability to capture more than just storms.

Using a DSLR (digital single-lens reflex) wide-angle lens and long exposure timelapse at night, he would shoot up to 30 seconds per frame.
Despite what we might see as utter perfection, Halverson explained that there plenty of times where the unreliable weather affected what he would consider “the perfect shot”. We beg to differ, however, and say that everything turned out just how the Universe intended.
