We love multi-functional everyday items — it’s the ultimate way to be eco-friendly. And Sprout by Democratech, a standard #2 cedar pencil containing a water-soluble seed where the eraser used to be, is making the wooden pencil cool again by extending — and creating more — life for the pencil when it’s too short to use!
From the creators:
Sprout is a pencil that wants to be a plant when it grows up. When it’s too short to use, plant Sprout to grow herbs, flowers and more!
Sprout is the brainchild of Mario Bollini and students in an MIT product design course, and is a truly full-circle product. In the words of Healthy Way to Cook, a plant that grows out of this pencil replaces the tree cut down to make it. It’s easy for those who are intimidated by gardening, and it really takes the idea of reducing, reusing, and recycling to heart.
For people who are afraid of the time commitment, it only takes a week of watering for the plants to sprout! And with so many options such as basil, cilantro, green pepper, mint, tomato, and more, it’s a great way to slowly build your mini garden.
Are you convinced yet? There are only a couple hours left to support them on Kickstarter!
