New York Fashion Week may be coming to a close today, but the fashion world still knows how to make waves with yet another project that is supremely fascinating to us. Tyra Banks recently debuted a photography project in which she impersonated 15 of the world’s most well-known supermodels.
Shot by world-renown fashion photographer Udo Spreitzenbarth, 15: A Tribute to the Supermodel had been more than a year in the making. Tyra collaborated with creative director Ty-Ron Mayes as well as hairstylist Shar Rae Tucker, who is a protege of the legendary Oribe, and Emmy award-winning makeup artist Valente Frazier to recreate the looks of models as young as Cara Delevingne to the most classic of models, like Grace Jones. The stylists took on the tasks of making Tyra look like these supermodels, but it was all up to her to emulate the looks down to a T. We think that Tyra has certainly captured a great likeness of many models and has certainly embraced the saying that “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.”
The release of some photos on her Twitter account has sparked a bit of controversy, but we are certainly fascinated by the concept behind the model choices as well as style choices that Tyra made. Tyra specifically requested that Udo Spreitzenbarth not digitally retouch any of the photos, which you can clearly see in photographs like Tyra’s portrayal of Cindy Crawford (above) and Karlie Kloss. Our personal favorites? Twiggy and Tyra as her 15-year-old self. The fact that Tyra started her modeling career at 15-years-old is a primary motive behind the name of the exhibition, as well as her choice in recreating 15 supermodels. Check out the recreations below.
If you’re interested in seeing the exhibition in person, please visit the exhibition in New York City before November 9, 2013.
