We Recap: Face Off Season 5 Episode 5 – Mother Earth Goddess

This week’s Spotlight Challenge begins in the Los Angeles Arboretum and Botanic Garden where the contestants will get inspired by Mother Nature. They must create an original Mother Nature goddess that includes something about their own mothers. Aww. That’s sweet…I guess?

...

There’s lots of pretty sketching of flowery things, but for some reason RJ decides to create a 1960s retro beehive mamma that looks awful. Lyma decides to go with a pregnant belly because circle of life blah blah blah. Amanda has a leafy character and gets some eyelash feedback from Michael Westmore. There’s also a caterpillar Venus flytrap, something about water, and there’s just a lot going on.

Frank is being weird and designing a coat and I don’t understand it at all. Lyma’s wig is massive and will surely drown out her pregnant figure. Meanwhile, Laney’s mold is a mess. Tate tries to help her out, but he ends up ripping the mannequin’s head off. Oops? He says it’s totally fixable, but he ripped her head off!

Scott starts fabricating a crown of leaves, but he doesn’t like the red color that exists in pseudonature, so he spends forever spray painting tiny leaves a slightly less reddish orange. When the models arrive, they’re happy to finally be transformed into something beautiful. Lyma’s pregnant belly turns out to be a clear stomach with a stuffed bunny inside, which is clever but a tad on the faux-cutesy side. During makeup application, Laney’s model is getting sick from the spraying and glitter and she just plain old up and walks out of the challenge. It’s almost like she didn’t understand the concept of the show when she signed up for this gig.

It’s reveal time! The judges are Glenn, Ve, and Neville.

Laney is first (probably so her model can wash her makeup off faster than the others) and it’s a big butterfly face with a boring mossy leaf bodice.

Syfy Face Off Season 5 Episode 5 - Mother Earth Goddess Spotlight Challenge - RoyPhoto: Syfy

Roy made an incredible tree costume, but the face is still very human.

Syfy Face Off Season 5 Episode 5 - Mother Earth Goddess Spotlight Challenge - EddiePhoto: Syfy

Eddie didn’t paint the face at all and that is going to be a problem.

Syfy Face Off Season 5 Episode 5 - Mother Earth Goddess Spotlight Challenge - TatePhoto: Syfy

Tate’s Mother Nature is hideous, which was not the assignment at all.

Syfy Face Off Season 5 Episode 5 - Mother Earth Goddess Spotlight Challenge -ScottPhoto: Syfy

Scott’s Mother Nature is like a real human in a red wig, which spells failure.

Syfy Face Off Season 5 Episode 5 - Mother Earth Goddess Spotlight Challenge - RJPhoto: Syfy

RJ’s wackadoodle 1960s-style Mother Nature falls waaaaay short of the challenge.

Syfy Face Off Season 5 Episode 5 - Mother Earth Goddess Spotlight Challenge - AlanaPhoto: Syfy

Alana’s flower figure is beautiful, and the face is so well done.

Syfy Face Off Season 5 Episode 5 - Mother Earth Goddess Spotlight Challenge - MirandaPhoto: Syfy

Miranda’s floral-inspired character is more creepy than Mother Nature.

Syfy Face Off Season 5 Episode 5 - Mother Earth Goddess Spotlight Challenge - LymaPhoto: Syfy

Lyma’s pregnant woodland creature is pretty amazing looking.

Syfy Face Off Season 5 Episode 5 - Mother Earth Goddess Spotlight Challenge - LauraPhoto: Syfy

Laura’s flowery mosshead is simply incredible, hands down the best one up there.

Frank barely manipulated the makeup at all, but the costume is beautiful yet simplistic.

Alana, Miranda, Laney, Tate, and Frank are safe. The rest are the best and the worst. Roy is up first with his tree twig lady, and the judges love it a lot. Eddie faces the judges with his clean-faced Mother Earth, and the judge are not happy about the lack of makeup. They wanted to see what the artists could do with beauty makeup, so this was a missed opportunity. Lyma presents her preggo Mother Nature. The judges like the silhouette, and Glenn calls it “cool” and “genius.” RJ is next with his retro disaster. It’s called “an unnerving display of design deficiency” and “a total failure.” Laura faces the judges with her flowery, caterpillary, Mother Nature. The paint job impresses the judges, and it’s called one of the most amazing makeup applications they’ve seen on the show. Scott’s red lady confuses the judges because it’s not feminine or beautiful.

The very deserving winner is Laura. Roy and Lyma are safe, and the three top designers head backstage. The bottom looks are Scott, RJ, and Eddie. The judges decide to send RJ home because his decisions were confusing, and he didn’t even do a good job with the makeup.

Break out the candy corns, because next week is an early Halloween!
